Prof. Rangachari Narayanan
The Project Leader

Professor Rangachari Narayanan graduated in Civil Engineering from Annamalai University (India) in 1951 and subsequently obtained his MSc and PhD degrees from Imperial College and Manchester University respectively. He is a Chartered Engineer, licensed to practise in Europe and is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and of the Institution of Structural Engineers. His honours include the Benjamin Baker Gold Medal and George Stephenson Gold Medal, both from the Institution of Civil Engineers and an honorary membership of the British Steel Construction Institute and of INSDAG. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Constructional Steel Research (JCSR) published from England.

In a varied professional career spanning 50 years, he has held Professorships in India, UK and USA and also headed the Education and Publications Division at the Steel Construction Institute in England. He has published over 130 papers in professional and learned society journals; edited 10 books on the "Stability and Strength" Series of Elseviers; presented over 25 papers in International Conferences; edited the Proceedings of the International Conference on Steel and Aluminium Structures 1987 (3 volumes). He has delivered seminars and keynote addresses at the invitation of many International Conferences and Universities in recent years. (USA, Canada, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and India)

He led the Project Team, which generated this Teaching Resource. The Team was drawn from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, Anna University and the Structural Engineering Research Centre Madras.

 

Dr. Satish Kumar

Dr. Satish Kumar obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Govt. College of Engineering, Pune in 1987. Subsequently he got his Masters degree from IIT Bombay and Doctoral degree from Nagoya University, Japan.

In an interesting career, which involved switching from academics to professional practice and back, he was exposed to various aspects of Civil Engineering such as Construction, Design, Consultancy and Research at a multinational steel company. He has published several papers in international journals and conferences in the area of Steel Structures and Earthquake Resistant Design. Currently he is working as an Assistant Professor in Structural Engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Madras.

Being a renowned academician he has been honoured with vrious prizes, scholarships, and fellowships including FNAE, FIE, FAeSI etc.

 

Dr. S. Seetharaman

Dr. S. Seetharaman obtained his first Degree in Civil Engineering in 1971 from Sambalpur University, a Master's Degree from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and a PhD degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He joined Structural Engineering Research Centre Madras, in 1974. He is a member of the Institution of Engineers (India), Computer Society of India and Indian Society for non-destructive Testing. He has published 35 papers in various Journals and Conferences and contributed chapters on Fatigue Analysis and Fracture Mechanics in edited books. He has worked in several areas of Structural Engineering, including Optimisation of Steel Framed Structures, Computer-aided Design, Offshore Structural Dynamics and Fatigue and Fracture.

Presently he works as an Assistant Director in the SERC, heading a group involved in the development of Computer Software for Steel Industrial Structures.

He has visited the Federal Republic of Germany on the CSIR-DADD Exchange Programme, during 1983.

 

Mr. Arul Jayachandran

Mr. Arul Jayachandran graduated from Madurai Kamaraj University in Civil Engineering in 1984 with a distinction. After brief stint at L&T; Chennai, he joined Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, and Tamil Nadu as an Associate Lecturer and taught undergraduate students for two years. He gained his M.S. degree from IIT Madras for his work on "Non-linear Instability Analysis of Stiffened and Unstiffened Plates".

He joined the Structural Engineering Research Centre Chennai in 1989 and since then he is researching in the area of Instability Analysis and Design of Steel Structural Systems. He has a few international and national publications to his credit. He was a member of the SERC, Chennai team that won the CSIR Technology Prize in 1999. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. at IIT Madras, while continuing to work as a scientist at SERC.

 

Professor A. R. Santha Kumar

Professor A. R. Santha Kumar obtained his first degree in Civil Engineering from the College of Engineering, Guindy in 1965 and subsequently obtained his MSc degree under the Technical Teachers Training Programme. He obtained his PhD degree as a Commonwealth Scholar from the University of Christchurch, NewZealand. His honours include Nagadi Award (1994) from the Association of Consulting Civil Engineers, a Visweswarayya Gold Medal (1993) for the research work on Transmission Line Towers from the Institution of Engineers (India), Nagpur Centre and the best paper award (1990) for his contribution on Tower Foundations, from the Central Board of Irrigation and Power, Government of India. McGraw Hill Singapore has published his book on Transmission Line Towers in 1994.

In a lifetime of service to Anna University, he has guided the research work of 17 PhD students and published several papers. He is currently the Dean of Civil Engineering at Anna University, Chennai.

 

Mr.R. Senthil

Mr. R. Senthil graduated in Civil Engineering from Annamalai University in 1989 and subsequently obtained a Master's degree from the same University. He has published a number of research papers and also edited a number of Conference Proceedings held at Anna University. He has also co-edited a publication titled "Steel in Construction 2000" published by the Joint Plant Committee of the Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India.

He is currently working as a Lecturer in Civil Engineering at Anna University, while simultaneously pursuing research towards his Ph.D. degree.
